1. duplicate original repository here: https://github.com/new/import

2. clone your own private repo

3. add upstream
   ```bash
   git remote add upstream https://github.com/EXAMPLE-USER/ORIGINAL-REPOSITORY.git
   git remote set-url --push upstream DISABLE
   ```
   list all your remotes with `git remote -v`
   > when you push, do so on `origin` with `git push origin`.

   > fetch upstream `git fetch upstream`

   > and restart github desktop
