Linux on a Dell Chromebook 11

Linux on a Dell Chromebook 11

NOTE: Last time I saw the Dell Chromebook, it was on a pile of electronics bound for the county recycling center. The N3060 CPU's 2 cores were just too sluggish for it to be usable during that overseas trip mentioned below. I leave this gist here mostly out of nostalgia.

My retail (not enterprise) Dell Chromebook 11 (an Inspiron model 3181, not the 3180 or 3189) went EOL shortly after I purchased it new from Best Buy. Since then it saw some hard use in the family kitchen as a recipe lookup device, but was finally retired when replaced by a (relatively) newer Android tablet (that also reached EOL shortly thereafter).

With an overseas trip looming, I decided to look into refurbishing the Chromebook for use as a privacy hardened travel laptop. Frankly, the thought of TSA and Customs manhandling my trusty portable workstation was too much to bear.

I mostly followed the detailed instructions in the Chrultrabook Docs, using the firmware supplied

Quick Systemd for No-IP
The origina solution is from Stack Overflow and while I'm sure it's in my history so are 1000 other pages so I gave up for time.
To the original creators, wherever you may be. All credit to you. I'm just putting it in an easy to find location.
First go and grab the source for the client from No-IP. - https://www.noip.com/support/knowledgebase/install-linux-3-x-dynamic-update-client-duc
You will need Rust installed to compile the client. There is no option to download it directly. The client download for Linux just redirects you to the tarbal. THe instructions will walk you through installing Rust. Once that is done just copy and paste off the page. If you set up everything correctly it should build with no problems. The biggest thing is to make sure you have a .cargo folder in your home folder. Other than that Rust is painless to install.
Once you have the client installed time to make magic.
Up to you if you want to do this from the dirctory or if you want to show how amazing you are at never moving yo

BASH: set variables for ANSI text color escape sequences
# Original gist from elucify so all credit to him.
# For use just paste in the codes you need at the top as variables.
# Just use ${Color with Format and Color} and close with ${RESTORE}. The sample gives the basic idea.
# Original Test Without Updated Code But Works
echo ${RED}RED${GREEN}GREEN${YELLOW}YELLOW${BLUE}BLUE${PURPLE}PURPLE${CYAN}CYAN${WHITE}WHITE${RESTORE}
# Colors
RED=$(echo -en '\033[00;31m')

M2000M passthrough experiences.

I've seen people passing their laptop dGPUs yet I haven't been successful because of a lot of reasons, mainly extracting the vbios (that somehow some laptop users can do but I cannot, and I wasn't the only one) and having it UEFI (mine wasn't which is weird as it's a SKL laptop) and they said that some Muxed laptops are easy to deal with. And after a while with the help of some people in the hackintosh discord server, we made an even larger layout list of display outputs we stumbled upon while helping some new users with their laptops (thanks /u/dhinakg):

dGPU Laptop setups

My laptop (Thinkpad P50) happened to be something like the Macbooks where there is a mux between the iGPU and dGPU to the eDP (this has been confirmed with my laptop's schematics).

Great! So you can just pass the dGPU and see stuff on either the display
