Sync with remote
git pull --rebase origin lifecycle
Initialize Git:
git init
Get everything ready to commit:
git add .
Get custom file ready to commit:
git add index.html
Commit changes:
git commit -m "Message"
Add and commit in one step:
git commit -am "Message"
Remove files from Git:
git rm index.html
Update all changes:
git add -u
Remove file but do not track anymore:
git rm --cached index.html
Move or rename files:
git mv index.html dir/index_new.html
Undo modifications (restore files from latest commited version):
git checkout -- index.html
Restore file from a custom commit (in current branch):
git checkout 6eb715d -- index.html
Go back to commit:
git revert 073791e7dd71b90daa853b2c5acc2c925f02dbc6
Soft reset (move HEAD only; neither staging nor working dir is changed):
git reset --soft 073791e7dd71b90daa853b2c5acc2c925f02dbc6
Undo latest commit: git reset --soft HEAD~
Mixed reset (move HEAD and change staging to match repo; does not affect working dir):
git reset --mixed 073791e7dd71b90daa853b2c5acc2c925f02dbc6
Hard reset (move HEAD and change staging dir and working dir to match repo):
git reset --hard 073791e7dd71b90daa853b2c5acc2c925f02dbc6
How to reset a local branch to the point where the remote is First change to a branch and commit it then change back to the branch you want to reset.
how to clear your staging area (and possibly the working directory), so that git status says nothing to commit, working directory clean.
The one-stop-answer is:
git fetch --prune (optional) Updates the local snapshot of the remote repo. Further commands are local only.
git reset --hard @{upstream} Puts the local branch pointer to where the snapshot of the remote is, as well as set the index and the working directory to the files of that commit.
git clean -d --force Removes untracked files and directories which hinder git to say “working directory clean”.
Test-Delete untracked files:
git clean -n
Delete untracked files (not staging):
git clean -f
Unstage (undo adds):
git reset HEAD index.html
Commit to most recent commit:
git commit --amend -m "Message"
Update most recent commit message:
git commit --amend -m "New Message"
You want to combine all the local commits into a single commit before pushing to the remote repository:
What you want to do is referred to as "squashing" in git. There are lots of options when you're doing this (too many?) but if you just want to merge all of your unpushed commits into a single commit, do this:
git rebase -i origin/master
This will bring up your text editor (-i is for "interactive") with a file that looks like this:
pick 16b5fcc Code in, tests not passing
pick c964dea Getting closer
pick 06cf8ee Something changed
pick 396b4a3 Tests pass
pick 9be7fdb Better comments
pick 7dba9cb All done
Change all the pick to squash except the first one:
pick 16b5fcc Code in, tests not passing
squash c964dea Getting closer
squash 06cf8ee Something changed
squash 396b4a3 Tests pass
squash 9be7fdb Better comments
squash 7dba9cb All done
Save your file and exit your editor. Then another text editor will open to let you combine the commit messages from all of the commits into one big commit message.
If you want to squash all commits while merging to master from bugfix branch:
git checkout master
git merge --squash bugfix
git commit

git push origin --delete branchname

git merge branchname

Changing History
#This will leave you with only one commit all history is removed!
git checkout --orphan newBranch
git add -A # Add all files and commit them
git commit
git branch -D master # Deletes the master branch
git branch -m master # Rename the current branch to master
git push -f origin master # Force push master branch to github
git gc --aggressive --prune=all # remove the old files

Install: brew install git-lfs
Track *.psd files: git lfs track "*.psd" (init, add, commit and push as written above)
If you want to delete all your commit history but keep the code in its current state, it is very safe to do it as in the following:
Checkout
git checkout --orphan latest_branch
Add all the files
git add -A
Commit the changes
git commit -am "commit message"
Delete the branch
git branch -D master
Rename the current branch to master
git branch -m master
Finally, force update your repository
git push -f origin master
PS: this will not keep your old commit history around
