Retrieving Docker Image Sizes

There are two metrics that are important to consider when discussing the size of Docker images.

Compressed size - This is often referred to as the wire size. This affects how fast/slow images can be pulled from a registry. This impacts the first run experience on machines where images are not cached.
Uncompressed size - This is often referred to as the size on disk. This affects how much local storage is required to support your Docker workloads.

The example commands shown below will work on Windows, MacOS, and Linux.

This is how I manage real production loads for my Rails apps. It assumes:

Rails 7+
Ruby 3+
PostgreSQL
Ubuntu Server 24.04
Capistrano, Puma, Nginx

Deploy Rails Application to AWS EC2

Creating AWS EC2 Instance

- login to 'AWS Management Console' (https://aws.amazon.com/console/)
- from 'Services'(in navbar) choose 'EC2'
- from 'Create Instance' section, click on 'Launch Instance'
- then select 'AMI' (Amazon Machine Image), we will be using 'Ubuntu Server 16.04 LTS (HVM)' as example
- select 'Instance Type' as per your requirement
- then click 'Next:Configure Instance Details' to continue
  change 'Configure Instance Details' or used as default settings
