Dual-boot Mac OS X (FileVault2) and Ubuntu (OpenZFS/LUKS)

This procedure results in a computer that runs both Mac OS X and Ubuntu in a dual-boot configuration, each operating system using full (whole) disk encryption, and with the Ubuntu root file system stored on a ZFS pool encrypted using LUKS. The specific hardware and software versions used to document this procedure are:

Easy parallel python with concurrent.futures

As of version 3.3, python includes the very promising concurrent.futures module, with elegant context managers for running tasks concurrently. Thanks to the simple and consistent interface you can use both threads and processes with minimal effort.

For most CPU bound tasks - anything that is heavy number crunching - you want your program to use all the CPUs in your PC. The simplest way to get a CPU bound task to run in parallel is to use the ProcessPoolExecutor, which will create enough sub-processes to keep all your CPUs busy.

We use the context manager thusly:

Linux Backup Solutions

I've been looking for the best Linux backup system, and also reading lots of HN comments.

Instead of putting pros and cons of every backup system I'll just list some deal-breakers which would disqualify them.

Also I would like that you, the HN community, would add more deal breakers for these or other backup systems if you know some more and at the same time, if you have data to disprove some of the deal-breakers listed here (benchmarks, info about something being true for older releases but is fixed on newer releases), please share it so that I can edit this list accordingly.

  • It has a lot of management overhead and that's a problem if you don't have time for a full time backup administrator.
