##Joe Chemo 's quit-smoking website analysis ######Social Psychology Homework Week 3

Website Overview

  • When I First enter the website , the homepage design is ordinary and doesn't impress me, and the width of the website is too small, that make user uncomfortable.(The First Impression is ordinary)

  • The connection of Joe Chemo 's Logo and the website's objective is not clear. when people visit the site, they first saw Joe Chemo's Logo. and the logo is not SALIENT. (Cannot make connection to quit smoking at FIRST SIGHT) (based on the thin slice research)

The 'Test your Tobacco IQ' part

  • The site use quizzes to test your 'Tobacco IQ', and after your anwsered each question, the site point's out the recent research of 'smoking is bad' and cite the source of the original research. Using people's obidence to authority to make the site more persuasive. [Lec 3.1 Obidence to Authority]

  • In Problem 5 of the quiz, it point out how hard it is to quit smoking (using statistcal data to make it more convincing) ,but it don't go any further(I recommand it to use the smoker's story and vivid picture to show how hard it is to quit smoking, because it's more salient)

  • When I entered the quiz, I tried diffenrent age, when teenage enters, the website doesn't show any sex-related martrial(The Problem 2 Differ when you enter the birth year too young, in replacement it show the proportion of teenager smokers) (I wonder why it not design a different question for old people) [Lec 4.4 Intergroup Bias]

  • When listing the consequences of smoking, the site used THREAT to stat the PERMANENT danger of smoking, using fear based appeal can increase persuasiveness (Because the only way to avoid the danger is quit-smoking) [Lec 2.6 Fear based appeal]

  • the final 15-second video it's funny and appealing, BUT it requires user to CLICK the link, why not embedded the video IN PAGE , that could make the site more impressive

The Smoke o Scope Part

  • This part is a quiz follow by advices to quit smoking , based on your anwser , the site give your MOST CONCERNED impact of smoking. (If you choose you re smoking now, the site will show

Bad news: Unless you quit smoking, you run a 50% lifetime risk of dying from your habit. Or putting it another way, if you and your spouse both continue to smoke, it's likely that one of you will die prematurely from cigarette smoking.

  • A DIRECT THREAT [Lec 2.6 Fear based appeal] (but why not make the threat more salient and appealing by using the red text and shocking image ) [Lec 1.8 Salience]

My opinion for this website

  • As I stated before, the width of the website is too small, that make people visiting the site uncomfortable , besides the font is too small and I can't find ANY BUTTON to increase font.

  • The picture displayed in this website is altogether too small, and it can't prove much SALIENCE (Because the research of thin slice judgement, THE FIRST IMPRESSION MATTERS)

  • I suggested that this site should make the 'Test your Tobacco IQ' Part a default page, becasuse it's the central power of persuasion, and the website can be rename as 'Test your Tobacco IQ by Joe Chemo' , that's more salient and more appealing.

  • Technique issue: This site can be refactored using HTML5 and CSS3 technique and Twitter Bootstrap to make it more beautiful and more appealing, user experiences do matter)
