90 minutes - plan for 80 minute practice to account for
- Players on ice and ready (we often lose five minutes here, yes we can talk about this)
- Water breaks, coach setup (perhaps plans like this can reduce both)
I intend to have the scoreboard winding down so the practice plan is created with time remaining on scoreboard)
By setting a practice long expectation, we can drive a skill home physically and mentally. All practice we will continue to ask the players to get into hockey position, before every drill, before every whistle. We don't have to bark, but start everything with "in hockey position.
- Explain point of emphasis for practic
- Hockey Position
- "Everything we do today we want to do in hockey position"
- Knees Bent
- Keep weight over balls of feet
- Shoulders over knees
- Knees over toes
- Two to three line drills that emphasize quickness and edges, can include goalies
- After this Goalie splits to do warmup goalie skating (See below)
Choosing from
- Lines including hockey stops?
- Maybe everything today is a hard skating drill
- Challenge them to use hockey position, longer strides better balance
- With ot without sticks
- More to come here
- Goalies can benefit from skating they do in their crease. Here is a warmup I did with a goalie every week while the team was warming up separately
- Goaltender Warm Up [ Basic Shuffles ]
- This is likely what I would do, even this simple shuffle with strong stops and starts and a motionless upper body is something we want to work on.
- Goalie Skating Warm Up Drills
If they work hard here expect a break
