Podman with docker-compose on MacOS.

Podman with docker-compose on MacOS.

Podman an alternative to Docker Desktop on MacOS

Getting podman installed and started is super easy.
Just use brew to install it.

> brew install podman

Now since podman uses a VM just like the Docker Client on MacOS we need to initialize that and start it.

Linting your code, the vanilla way

Linting your code, the vanilla way

You may want a linter plugin to lint your code in Vim but you probably don't need it. At least try the built-in way before jumping on the plugin bandwagon.

Defining makeprg

autocmd FileType <filetype> setlocal makeprg=<external command>

This autocommand tells Vim to use <external command> when invoking :make % in a <filetype> buffer. You can add as many similar lines as needed for other languages.

Ctags for ruby on rails and node applications

Install ctags

http://ctags.sourceforge.net follow this url for installation and documentation.

Ctags with Ruby/Rails

We can ctags lots of programming languages. Here is how to do it for ruby/rails. I really like how RubyMine jumps to the source code (either withing project score or to the gem source). This is really useful for reading source code for those classes, methods, modules etc. But Now that I use vim as My IDE/Editor I really like that functionality to happen in my vim editor. And I found ctags as the solution.

A Logstash Grok Pattern for Rails 3
####################################
### Rais3 Log Grok (Unicorn and Thin supported at :info level)
## There are many non-capturing groups. For debugging, change them to named groups and use http://grokconstructor.appspot.com/do/match
#
## Assumes Rails is prepending :uuid to log lines, with one log per unicorn worker.
## Assumes the whole request is sent multiline (by Filebeat, not Logstash mulitline plugin)
#
## Add this to the Filebeat.yml prospector
## multiline:
# pattern: '\[[a-fA-F0-9]{32}\]( Started |$)'

Summary of 'Clean code' by Robert C. Martin

Code is clean if it can be understood easily – by everyone on the team. Clean code can be read and enhanced by a developer other than its original author. With understandability comes readability, changeability, extensibility and maintainability.

General rules

  1. Follow standard conventions.
  2. Keep it simple stupid. Simpler is always better. Reduce complexity as much as possible.
  3. Boy scout rule. Leave the campground cleaner than you found it.
  4. Always find root cause. Always look for the root cause of a problem.
