Installfest!

We have an optional installation night for the GDI Boston Node.js class on Monday, November 9th at Maxwell Health. If you already have these programs installed or want to install them on your own then we'll see you for Class 1 on November 10th!

Please bring along a laptop and charger to installation night. We will be installing the following programs:

• Sublime Text 3
• Version 0.12.7 of node.js
• Git

And please read through a section fully before running any commands!

Sublime Text

We suggest using Sublime Text as an editor. You can download it by going to the Sublime homepage and clicking the 'download' button.

Node.js

We'll be following these instructions for installing node with a few notable changes if you're a Mac user:

• Windows
• Mac

For Mac users, stop before you run the command brew install node. Instead, run these commands:

brew tap homebrew/versions
brew search node
brew install homebrew/versions/node012

Then continue following the instructions.

A Note about Node versions

For this class we are going to use version 0.12.7 of node.js. As some of you may know, node is currently at version 5.0.0. It jumped from version 0.12.7 to version 4.0.0 in September 2015 due to a merge with io.js, a group that was working on improvements to the platform. We are going to stick with version 0.12.7 for this class for two reasons:

1. Many node packages have not been updated to work with the new version of node.
2. Most companies who use node have not upgraded versions yet, which means that most code you'll encounter is at version 0.12.7 or below.

If you're interested in working with node 5.0.0

Git

For Mac users, open your Terminal by typing Command + spacebar, then typing Terminal and pressing the return/enter button. Check if you have git installed by typing git and presing enter. If you already have git installed you should see something like this:

If you don't have git installed, you will see instructions on how to install it.
