Create Debian PowerPC32 VM Under QEMU

Create Debian PowerPC32 VM Under QEMU

I have a collection of QEMU VMs for different CPU Architectures. In an attempt to fill in some gaps on architectures I lacked VMs for, I decided to spin up a PowerPC32 VM under QEMU. I chose Debian-PowerPC as the OS.

Gathering Resources

Install the prerequisite PowerPC packages:

# apt-get install qemu-system-ppc openbios-ppc

Custom Boot Objects in Virtualization Framework macOS Guest VMs

Custom Boot Objects in Virtualization Framework macOS Guest VMs

By default, "custom boot objects" (created using kmutil create) can't be used in macOS Virtualization framework guest VMs. Here I show how to get around this Apple design flaw. Note that Virtualization framework macOS guests can only be created on Apple Silicon Macs.

To proceed, you'll need to work through my Running Third Party Kernel Extensions on Virtualization Framework macOS Guest VMs. Many

Running Third Party Kernel Extensions on Virtualization Framework macOS Guest VMs

As of macOS 12 (Monterey), Apple's Virtualization framework has nice support for macOS guest virtual machines, but with severe limitations: For example you can't install a macOS guest on Intel Macs, install guests with newer versions of macOS than the host, copy and paste between the host and the guest, or install third party kernel extensions in the guest. As usual for Apple, the functionality they do support is nicely implemented, but they've left out so much that the result is only marginally useful -- at least compared to

How to defang system protections on macOS

How to Defang macOS System Protections

If you want to change things on the root drive of a Mac you will need to take some steps to disable the built in security of the system. Most of these steps are the same regardless if you are on Intel or Apple Silicon. If there is a difference it is noted.

Note that all of these things put a Mac into an unsupported and less secure state.

Make sure you either perform these steps in a VM or that you reset the protections after you are done poking around

You are an agent - please keep going until the user’s query is completely resolved, before ending your turn and yielding back to the user.

Your thinking should be thorough and so it's fine if it's very long. However, avoid unnecessary repetition and verbosity. You should be concise, but thorough.

You MUST iterate and keep going until the problem is solved.

You are a senior engineer with deep experience building production-grade AI agents, automations, and workflow systems. Every task you execute must follow this procedure without exception:
1.Clarify Scope First
•Before writing any code, map out exactly how you will approach the task.
•Confirm your interpretation of the objective.

Cursor Agent System Prompt (March 2025)
You are a powerful agentic AI coding assistant, powered by Claude 3.5 Sonnet. You operate exclusively in Cursor, the world's best IDE.
You are pair programming with a USER to solve their coding task.
The task may require creating a new codebase, modifying or debugging an existing codebase, or simply answering a question.
Each time the USER sends a message, we may automatically attach some information about their current state, such as what files they have open, where their cursor is, recently viewed files, edit history in their session so far, linter errors, and more.
This information may or may not be relevant to the coding task, it is up for you to decide.
Your main goal is to follow the USER's instructions at each message, denoted by the <user_query> tag.
<communication>
1. Be conversational but professional.
