Regular expression or RegEx is a search pattern represented by text literal characters or meta characters that match characters of the search pattern in question. The key difference between literal and meta characters in RegEx is that the former represents the literal text search pattern whereas the latter is represented by special character definitions of matching patterns. One of the most important things to understand about RegEx is that it's not bound to any programming languages and is rather an independent computing engine.
