| These are a smattering of relatively well-tested Dutch Oven (**DO**) recipes I've used during camping trips over the last few years (to great success)!. I just wanted to start putting them in one place. All of these pretty much use a 12" DO and depending on the dish, between 15-30 briquettes. I may abbreviate things, so C=cup, TBSP=tablespoon, TSP=teaspoon. | |
| # Brownies (1 box serves ~8) | |
| You'll need a spoon and a healthy appetite for chocolate. | |
| ## Ingredients | |
| - 1 box dry brownie mix | |
| - Depending on the mix, 2-3 eggs | |
| - water | |
| - oil | |
| - 1 C of chocolate chips | |
| ## Directions | |
| Pour dry ingredients (box) into dutch oven, add eggs, water, and oil as directed on package, mixing evenly. Then add chocolate chips. Depending on consistency, you can add an extra egg to make it more cakey, or if not, more gooey. Also depends on how hot the briquettes are. | |
| ## Baking | |
| Place on ~10 briquettes of hot (white/red) coals under the DO, and 18 briquettes on lid, evenly around the edge and near middle. Check after 12-15 min, and then wait at least 5 min before checking again. Every time you open, you lose your heat and the effect of the "oven" is reduced. Stick it with a skewer/knife until you get a consistency you are happy with. If it comes out clean it is generally considered "done", but some prefer gooey and slightly underdone (think lava cake). | |
| Bear in mind this makes enough for about 8 people, but you can double the recipe and it should work in a 12" DO, but might take closer to 40 minutes and will potentially require replenishing coals a bit while it's cooking. |
